Setouchi Brewery / Takehara Campbell Early 2022 (Rosé Sparkling) 750ml

One of Setouchi Brewery's flagship wines, made from grapes grown in our own vineyard along the Seto Inland Sea in Takehara City, Hiroshima Prefecture.

Campbell Early is a variety that can be called the original strain planted generation after generation in this land where grape cultivation has been carried out since the Meiji era. Even now, in the region, old Campbell vines over 100 years old are carefully preserved. The area where grapes are cultivated in Takehara is at the mouth of the Kamo River flowing into the Seto Inland Sea. In some places, seawater seeps out when digging the ground, making it a harsh environment for grapes.

We started making this wine in 2019. Nationwide, there are not many wineries working with Campbell Early wine, and we struggled a lot with how to finish it so that it would be loved as a wine that pairs well with meals.

The grape's personality lies in its floral aroma and acidity. Although it is originally a variety with a floral aroma, we feel that the Campbell from Takehara is more floral compared to those from other regions. Local producers say the reason might be that "because it is a stressful environment, the grapes try to strengthen their vitality."

Also, to bring out the acidity of the grapes, a temperature difference between morning and evening during the growing season is necessary, but since this is not a mountainous area, there is not much temperature variation. Nevertheless, the acidity stands out as a characteristic of the grape's original personality. As a sparkling wine with a stronger pressure due to secondary fermentation in the bottle, the aroma has been maximized.
