When the land and variety truly match, you can feel the terroir of that land in liquid form. For us, Albariño is precisely a variety that can express the terroir. As the name Kakuda-hama suggests, our vineyard where these grapes are planted has an extremely sandy soil, like a beach. The lightness of the sand that does not retain water and the crispness that spills from your hand when you scoop up dry sand are reflected in the wine as well. Additionally, the location, just 1.5 km from the coast, imparts a salty flavor to the wine. While it may differ in vector from the Albariño produced in the Rías Baixas region of Spain, I am confident that it is undoubtedly a variety and wine that is well-suited to the land.
