In 2020, we reclaimed abandoned farmland in Nirei, Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture, and established a 1.8-hectare vineyard. Surrounded by mountains, this site is located at an elevation of 600 meters with a 12% slope and well-drained limestone soil, offering a panoramic view of the Northern Shinshu Five Peaks. With the support of the local community and government, we finally realized our long-awaited goal of cultivating grapes in our own vineyard.
In spring 2021, we planted my favorite Italian variety, Aglianico, along with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Thanks to favorable weather in 2023, we were able to harvest for the first time. However, due to the small yield and no barrel aging, the Chardonnay released this time delivers its natural flavor without any barrel refinement.
