The vineyard where this wine was made is a 32a vineyard planted with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sangiovese by someone who started farming there in 2014.
In 2019, just after moving to Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture, the vineyard owner contacted me wanting to let go due to busyness with other vineyards, and since I was looking for a vineyard, I was able to take it over at just the right time.
The elevation is about 350m, low for Suzaka City, but because it’s far from the mountains east and west, sunlight hours are long. Compared to the neighboring wine-producing village (Takayama Village), there’s no big temperature difference, but bud break is early and the growing season is long.
When I took over the vineyard, I was happy to find the Italian native variety Sangiovese planted, reminding me of Super Tuscan blended wines representing Tuscany, Italy, which I love.
But Sangiovese is very difficult to grow in rainy Japan; the clusters and berries become large and split, sugar levels don’t rise easily, and color is poor, so we struggled every year.
However, Sangiovese brings a rich flavor not found in other grapes when blended, so in 2022 we limited yields and focused on sugar content and color as much as possible.
Since we harvest after ripening, Merlot and Sangiovese were picked about two weeks later than usual on October 15 and 16, and Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested on November 1.
From 2023, the main vineyard will be a new site (1.8ha in the Nirei area of Suzaka City), so this vineyard will be retired after 2022, making this wine a commemorative culmination of four years.
Since it’s new oak, we didn’t want to overpower the wine with barrel aroma, so one-third was aged in barrels and two-thirds in stainless steel tanks for 10 months, then blended and bottled, resulting in a gentle oak scent.
We still feel it needs more aging before drinking. It has firmness, acidity, and greenness, so we recommend aging it for over a year before enjoying.
We hope you enjoy this while thinking of Italy. Ciao!
